Message on Behalf of Peter Boal

Dear PNBS families,

You may know I’ve written a memoir titled, Illusions of Camelot. It will be published next week. I’m excited about the release. I imagine some students and their families will be curious about the book, and I thought it might be helpful if I wrote to you about it.

The book chronicles my childhood from age two to twenty in thirty-three chapters, a forward and an epilogue. The youthful stories are humorous. The adolescent stories are darker and sadder. Each family has their own norms about what is discussed with children at what age, and some of the stories may not be age-appropriate. First and foremost, a theme throughout the book is my father’s alcoholism and his eventual passing. I also write about finding my way as a young adult in New York City, with all of the pitfalls and pleasures of a new-found independence. Though there are several chapters about dance – discussing School of American Ballet, Jerome Robbins and George Balanchine, this is not a book about ballet. It is about community, family, loss and finding one’s self.

I’m proud of this book and hope people read it, but I also want to be open and transparent about content, with the understanding it may not be for readers of all ages.

I look forward to seeing you at School Performance!

Sincerely,
Peter

You’re Invited! New Voices I Showing

Dear New Voices I Families,

What an incredible year we have had in New Voices I! We’ve chatted with powerhouse choreographer Jessica Lang, witnessed beautiful dance works by Dance Theater of Harlem, Dwight Rhoden, and Kidd Pivot, shared solo work in our first showing, and now we have two more exciting events happening before the year is up!

First! We are taking New Voices I on TOUR! Well, ok, we are only going to Bellevue, but it’s a tour! The students will show work they have been creating AND share their experiences in this class for the Level VI students at FRC. This event serves as an introduction to New Voices for students and families on the Eastside. Since this is a similar showing to our next event, I’d like to invite only one or two family members to attend. This is a free event!

EASTSIDE LEVEL VI FAMILIES – You’re Invited! – New Voices Showing

Dear Students and Families of Level VI,

My name is Ms. Stone and I am the instructor for Modern and New Voices at PNB (Phelps Center.) I had the wonderful opportunity to teach Level VI Modern for a few weeks back in September.

You may or may not be aware of a special course that is offered to Level VII and Level VIII students at PNB. It’s called New Voices: Choreography and Process for Young Women in Dance. I created this course in 2018 with the purpose of educating and supporting the next generation of female choreographers. In this yearlong class, the students are given tools to help access their creativity and then are asked to create their own work based on the information given during the course. The students of New Voices I have two in-studio presentations a year featuring both solo and duet work.

As a way of introducing this course to incoming students, New Voices is coming to the FRC!

I’d like to invite you all to a showing of choreography by the New Voices I (Level VII) students! This showing will give all current Level VI and incoming Level VII students an opportunity to see some of the wonderful work the students of New Voices have created. We will also reserve time to ask questions about the course, its process, and how it supports the training at PNB. This is a free event!

You’re Invited! New Voices II Showing

Dear Level VIII Families,

What an incredible year it has been for New Voices II! We’ve chatted with female powerhouse choreographers Chrystal Pite and Penny Saunders, witnessed beautiful dance work by Dance Theater of Harlem, Dwight Rhoden, and Kidd Pivot, and now we are ready to show you exciting, original new work the students have created.

In addition, New Voices II has been given the special opportunity to learn repertoire by Bessie Award winning choreographer Jessica Lang. The students will be presenting an excerpt from Ghost Variations which was taught and coached by two principle PNB dancers, Cecilia Iliesiu and Leta Biasucci. This rare and wonderful opportunity helps these young women have a deeper understanding of what it means to learn and execute choreography in a profession setting. It’s a beautiful sight to see!

Please join us for this EXCITING evening of dance!
